Response Letter from the President

This letter is in response to a letter posted on the NBNU website which was very upsetting to our LPN’s, PCA’s and Paramedics in Healthcare.

After reading the letter I reached out to the President of NBNU, Paula Doucette to question her on the intent of this letter; where was this coming from and why. I want to convey her exact words to you, “this letter was in no way meant to be a divide and concur letter, they respect all healthcare classifications, it takes everyone to make the system function.”

Message from the President

Now that I be had a minute to sit down and think about the day and this announcement, there is a few things I would like to say and a number of people I would like to thank.

Since 2012, NBCHU CUPE Local 1252 has been fighting against this file on several fronts.

I have been reading posts and comments thanking me for this outcome, however as President of CUPE 1252 I am not the sole reason this outcome has happened.   Am I part of it, absolutley, but without the membership having faith, trust, patience and being part of the campaign against Sodexo, the outcome may have been different.

Donation for May 2018 flood

A resolution was presented to the NEB today and was passed unanimously.

CUPE National are going to donate $20,000 to be split among six food banks in the regions most impacted by the devastating May 2018 flood.


  • Communities in New Brunswick are still recovering after being hit by the devastating flood. Thousands of citizens have seen their houses destroyed or partly destroyed by the water.
  • This money will go directly to food banks that have seen their stock depleted and who are struggling to restock their shelves.
  • CUPE believes it is its role to support the communities affected by such tragedies.

aed sponsorshipCardiac arrest can happen without warning, to anyone. Performing CPR and using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) until emergency medical services arrive can double the chance of surviving a cardiac arrest.

We would like to recognize the wonderful generosity of CUPE 1252, New Brunswick Council of Hospital Unions. With their donation of $30,000, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick is able to place 8 AEDs in elementary and middle schools throughout the province where this lifesaving device was previously absent.

For all members of the local

Over the last several months, the executive of L1252 have heard your concerns about workload, working short, workplace violence and retention. Therefore, we are asking you to take a few moments of your time to complete this very important survey so that we will have the proper information and data when speaking to your employer on these very important issues. This is open to all classifications and members to complete as it will provide very important information for us to present at the bargaining table.

Public and Private Sector Pay: Why Workers Need to “Break the Mandate”

On Monday, March 19th, the Daily Gleaner published an editorial misrepresenting the position of CUPE members and attacking the right of public sector unions to exist.

Why is the Daily Gleaner so opposed to the betterment of the working conditions in this province? Painting ordinary CUPE members – our plow operators, licensed practical nurses, educational assistants, municipal workers, nursing-home caregivers that are delivering essential services - as “fat cats” is as false as it is ridiculous.

Editorial: Hold line on public sector wages


A public sector union conference underway this week in Fredericton is titled “Breaking the Mandate.” But it would be more appropriate to call it “Breaking the Bank.”

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is calling for drastic action, even mass strikes. The move is to force the province to bump-up pay hikes to two per cent per year – an amount above many private sector raises and well above what taxpayers can afford.

During the last round of negotiations, NBCHU CUPE Local 1252 and the Government of New Brunswick bargaining teams agreed that the Joint Maintenance Committee (JMC) will conduct a complete and thorough review of Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) jobs during the term of the collective agreement.

What HAS Been Done to date

On January 23, 2018, CUPE Hospital Local 1252 organized an education day with a Joint Job Evaluation (JJE) specialist from CUPE National. LPNs from all sites reviewed the job evaluation process and Job Analysis Questionnaire (JAQ). LPNs in attendance are considered the Champions in your facilities and their role is to support and guide you through the process.

Participating in the review

Your participation is important. Each LPN will have the opportunity to provide information about their job by completing a JAQ with a group of fellow employees who do the same or similar job, or by completing a JAQ on their own.

Copies of the JAQ are available on Skyline, Boulevard and the NBCHU CUPE Local 1252 website.

Please use your own words when completing the JAQ and provide clear and concise statements. The collection of accurate, complete and up-to-date information is essential to, and forms the basis of, the job evaluation process.

The JAQ must be completed and date stamped by Human Resources no later than April 2, 2018. The employee, or group representative, is then responsible for forwarding the JAQ to his or her respective manager/supervisor for review and comments.

The completed JAQ must be submitted to Human Resources by April 30, 2018. Once tracked, all requests are to be sent to the JMC care of Treasury Board.

Next Steps

The JMC will review all submissions received in accordance with Article 40.04 of the collective agreement. Results will be communicated once the JMC has completed the evaluation process.



Health-care union, province reach deal

FREDERICTON • New Brunswick’s largest union representing health-care workers has signed a tentative agreement with the province for a new contract.

No details have been released about the tentative deal for just under 10,000 licensed practical nurses, paramedics, and clerical and housekeeping staff at the hospitals, but it comes on the heels of the government signing a new contract with the teachers’ union.

President’s Message

Good Morning NBCHU CUPE Local 1252 Membership..... I want to inform you the CUPE 1252 Bargaining Team have reached a Tentative Agreement with the Province of NB. I want to thank your bargaining team, our Coordinator Ralph McBride and Co-Coordinator Patrick Roy for achieving the Tentative Agreement and for their dedication commitment to the membership of 1252.

A meeting for all the President locals will be held on July 8th at the Fredericton Trade and Convention Center for the presentation of the tentative agreement. 

On July 10th, meetings will be held in each local to explain the tentative agreement to all members.

The ratification vote will be held province wide on July 13th.
